Silicon steel, as Si is the main additive element. It was discovered in 1900 by Hadfield (1926) that the addition of silicon improves the soft magnetic properties of steel. As Si content increases, magnetic permeability increases, due to low magneto-crystalline anisotropy and low magnetostrictive coefficients (Bozorth, 1951). Also, eddy current iron loss decreases, due to the increase in electrical resistivity. However, as Si content increases further, the saturation magnetization decreases, and cold-rolling becomes difficult over 3 mass% Si because of embrittlement.
